On tonight's History Files, Cam Edwards reports that a survey by the American Revolution Center on public knowledge about the birth of the US shows both frightening and encouraging trends. The primary result of the study was that most Americans are ignorant about the most basic facts of the American Revolution, as nearly 83% of those taking the Center's short test received failing grades. On the other hand, Edwards points out that an opinion poll component of the survey shows that the number of Americans who see the right to bear arms as important has increased in recent years, while public opinion about the significance of other rights has remained stable or even fallen. Widespread historical ignorance and apathy toward fundamental rights are disturbing trends, but growing American appreciation for the Second Amendment is a silver lining to this cloud.
