Few American shooters ever achieve the pinnacle associated with the award of the distinguished badge in pistol, rifle or international rifle competition, but one special shooter received the gold distinguished badge three times over. U.S. Marine Captain William W. McMillan represented America in the 1952 ISU matches in Oslo, Norway, won the 1954 Venezuela Pistol Match at Caracas, Venezuela, and brought home Olympic gold from the 1960 games in Rome.

While he used a High Standard .22 for his 25-meter rapid-fire pistol Olympic win, McMillan's well-worn Colt .45 semi-automatic pistol, embellished with Mexican gold and silver grip panels, and his triple distinguished badge bar rest today in the National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Va., as part of the National Medals Collection.
