Cam Edwards speaks to NRA Illinois Lobbyist Todd Vandermyde by phone from the NRA's Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. Vandermyde discusses the news that violence-ridden East St. Louis, Illinois is losing 19 of its 62 police officers due to budget cuts, leaving only one patrolman working the midnight shift. He says that as police departments across the country resort to drastic lay-offs, the importance of the right to carry becomes more evident. In Illinois, which has no right to carry, nine out of ten shooting victims never have the opportunity to see their attackers brought to justice, meaning that citizens should have the right to protect themselves instead of counting on overstretched police departments to keep them safe.
