Former Congressman Bob Barr talks to Ginny Simone about recent incidents of piracy in the Indian Ocean and the continuing unwillingness of the United Nations to allow the crews of merchant vessels to defend themselves. The official UN argument is that armed resistance would make attacks more brutal and lead to an escalation in pirate arms acquisitions, but Barr points out that the pirates already have access to a vast number of sophisticated weapons. The effectiveness of fighting back is proved by the recent second hijacking attempt on the Maersk Alabama, when pirates were repelled by armed guards on the ship.
