In a recent article published by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the phrase "illegal immigrant" is denounced as an "offensive" term to Latinos. Cam Edwards holds a heated debate with Leo Laurence of the SPJ Diversity Committee concerning his assertion that calling someone "illegal" is at odds with the constitutional ideal of "innocent until proven guilty," and that "undocumented" would be a more appropriate term. Edwards points out that if a journalist can conclude that an immigrant is undocumented, then it is the same thing as being illegal since being undocumented IS illegal. Moreover, Edwards points out that the term "illegal" is often used by the media to describe firearms-without judicial precedent. Originally aired 12/30/2010.
