During his recent visit to the United States, Mexican President Felipe Calderon claimed that about 80% of the guns seized in his country from drug-dealing gangs are of American origin. Senior Research Fellow Ted Bromund of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom tells Ginny Simone that this figure is far from the truth. He explains that we have statistics on the number of American guns reported but not on the total number seized, and the Mexican government is not transparent about its law enforcement activities. Bromund says that the percentage of illegal weapons coming from America is probably less than 25%, and that in any case the problem results from smuggling and not from illicit sales in the US.
