Robinson talks about the need for the people's right to defend themselves. "Police are a vital line of defense," says the NRA past president and current NRA Board member, "but the victim, the person targeted by the criminal, is the first line of defense." Kayne Robinson reminds members at the 2009 Annual Meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, that the NRA officer roster is largely comprised of former law-enforcement professionals.
However, he explains, because of this strong relationship with the heroes in blue, the NRA has an especially deep understanding that policemen are rarely able to get to the scene until after the crime is committed. "In your home situation, a gun may not be your choice, but for some people, a gun is a reasonable answer. They should always have a right to choose, and that's why we fight!"
