Investigative reporter John Diedrich of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported a series of controversial BATFE gun stings that included front operations such as pawnshops and tattoo parlors to purchase stolen weapons and other goods. The operations included the use of the mentally disabled, tattooing, onsite use of drugs, active solicitation of illegal sales, and operating in safe zones near schools and churches. Diedrich reports that those involved in the operation have been disciplined. One agent has received a "memorandum of caution," while three others have received a "memorandum of clearance."
