Cam Edwards tells the story of an armed citizen from a Palm Springs, California fire-rescue station who hopped a fence to aid a fallen police officer. The officer had been in a tangle with Mauricio Cruz, a 35-year-old ex-con who had been out of prison only a week. Cruz pulled out the officer's stun gun darts and attacked him with a ceramic flowerpot, and then bashed him in the head repeatedly with his own gun. The captain at the nearby fire station rushed to the side of the policeman with his personal firearm and shot at Cruz along with a second officer. Cruz was later pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center. That's today's Hero of the Day story.
