Young man overcomes poverty and abandonment to attend college. On today's special extra segment of Hero of the Day, Cam Edwards reports on a different kind of hero: not an armed citizen exercising a right to self-defense, but rather a student who refused to be drawn into a world of crime. Derrius Quarles of Chicago was born to a father who died when he was four years old, and a mother whose drug addiction caused her to lose custody of her child. Despite his difficult childhood as a ward of the state, Quarles excelled in school and was offered more than $1 million in aid money from various colleges. He accepted a $355,000 scholarship from Morehouse College, where he will start as a freshman in the fall.
