Following upwards of 80 attempted terror attacks between 2013 and 2018 on French soil, a parliamentary commision was formed to find ways to support local police. It has released over 70 recommendations, including making firearms mandatory for all municipal officers. Current law allows arming local police at a mayor's request, but about half of the nation's cops are unarmed. Laura Fillault says she's amazed it's taken so long. Imagine being called to a domestic dispute with absolutely nothing to defend yourself. There's an overarching attitude in France that guns are uncivilized. Laura says it's in part due to continued distrust of police for their collaboration with Nazi Germany during the Vichy regime. Originally aired on Cam & Co 09/13/18.
