The Weekly Standard's Mark Hemingway responds to a lengthy article by New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik. He questions whether the American Revolution was really such a good idea after all, saying that "we could have been Canada." Using historical counterfactuals, the writer performs a thought experiment that begins, "what if it was a mistake from the start?" Mark says that these "what if" pieces can be interesting, but it is not nearly as taboo as the writer indicates. He points out that the article is silent on how the Founding Father's ideals created the greatest economic engine and force for liberty that the world has ever seen.
