A new round of gun control laws will go into effect on January 1, 2017 in California. Sales of semi-automatic rifles using the "bullet button" will be banned, but those bought before January 1 can be kept if they are registered as "assault weapons." As a result, many gun dealers are reporting that sales of the California-specific long gun have more than doubled. Firearms instructor and blogger Dennis Santiago says that he has seen this every time there has been a new ban. It isn't market-driven demand – it's driven by the bans.
