Reason senior editor Brian Doherty responds to a headline-making study published in the medical journal The Lancet. It concludes that implementing three gun laws would reduce American gun deaths by 97 percent. Even gun control advocates are skeptical of the methodology and conclusions drawn from the study. Implementing universal background checks, ammunition background checks and a firearms identification system (microstamping) are at the core of the conclusions. Doherty says that their real purpose was not to convince the scientific community, but rather to put ideas into the minds of low information voters with wild headlines.
