Bakery Owner Wounds Robber

Suspect demanded money, pretending to have a concealed gun. In today's Hero of the Day, Cam Edwards reports that Demetrius Newbill, 29, entered the Pasteleria Panaderia, a bakery in Waukegan, IL., and handed the owner a holdup note. The owner, who thought that he saw a concealed firearm in the suspect's waistband, handed over the cash from the register along with the business phone. Newbill appeared to be reaching for his waistband as he exited the premises, so the owner pulled a .38-caliber pistol from under the counter and shot him three times. The robber, who turned out to be unarmed, was listed in stable condition at the hospital, where he confessed to robbing the bakery under the threat of having a gun.
