This date in history marked the beginning of the Rwanda massacres. On April 6, 1994, tribal Hutu militia members attacked their tribal Tutsi countrymen after the plane of then-President Juvenal Habyarimana – a Hutu – was shot down. Over the next 100 days, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were murdered. Most of the dead were Tutsis, and most who perpetrated the violence were Hutus.
