A classic big-bore Hawken made in St. Louis during the heyday of the fur trade, this rifle is associated with Edward F. Beale's expedition to California to confirm the presence of gold in 1849. The traditional Hawken side-opening patch box lid is adorned with a hand-engraved representation of an American bison. Samuel Hawken's rifle can be seen at the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia.
