Shaneen Allen was arrested and charged with illegally carrying a firearm in New Jersey, even though she legally owned the gun and had a concealed-carry permit for it in Pennsylvania. The single mother of two young children was arrested on the way to a birthday party for her son and spent 46 days behind bars. Now, being denied a motion of dismissal or admission to a pre-trial intervention program, she is facing up to three and a half years in prison—all for what she readily admits was an honest mistake.
It has not escaped Allen's attention that the prosecutor who deemed her unfit for pre-trial intervention extended this benefit to disgraced NFL star Ray Rice. Does New Jersey think that beating a woman unconscious is more deserving of forgiveness than misunderstanding a statute? The difference seems to be that Ray Rice didn’t use a gun.
